Alcohol consumption in France: one more glass of French paradox
نویسندگان
چکیده
In France, excessive drinking is essentially an issue among men. More than four men vs. one woman out of ten are affected. Moreover, one in every two men between the age of 25 and 64 is an excessive drinker. Excessive drinking is less common among people living in a family, except when another member of the family drinks excessively. The links between excessive alcohol consumption and socio-economic status appear to be complex. Among women, the risk is significant for executives only, while among men it affects executives as well as blue collar workers, but is less frequent among employees. Persons who have experienced periods of social disadvantage during their lives, men working in intermediate professions, self employed, salespersons, executives and men with low income are more likely to have a chronic rather than an episodic consumption pattern. Finally the least well-off are most likely to be non-drinkers. These results are based on a general population survey which for the first time in France enables to identify excessive, moderate and non-drinking behaviours. n° 129 January 2008

Brief Motivational Intervention to Reduce Alcohol Consumption in Young Patients in an Emergency Department: The AURAIA Research Study
Background: Sixty-two percent of the young people between 16 to 24 years-old living in the catchment area of the study take 5 glasses and more in one occasion as compared to 45.8% in the entire France. Previous studies showed that if the alcohol consumption starts earlier, the risk for alcohol dependence increases at the adult age. In some countries, the motivational intervention has been alrea...
متن کاملWine, alcohol, platelets, and the French paradox for coronary heart disease.
In most countries, high intake of saturated fat is positively related to high mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD). However, the situation in France is paradoxical in that there is high intake of saturated fat but low mortality from CHD. This paradox may be attributable in part to high wine consumption. Epidemiological studies indicate that consumption of alcohol at the level of intake i...

متن کاملWhy heart disease mortality is low in France: the time lag explanation.
In France mortality from ischaemic heart disease is about a quarter of that in Britain. The major risk factors are no more favourable in France, and this so called “French paradox” has not been satisfactorily explained. Table 1 shows the difference in mortality from heart disease between the countries, and table 2 shows the similar levels of animal fat consumption, serum total cholesterol and h...
متن کاملFetal alcohol syndrome: the 'American Paradox'.
Nearly all cases of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) identified in prospective epidemiological studies have been conducted in the United States of America. The very high incidence rate for FAS in the USA and the relatively low rate in other countries does not correspond to measures of alcohol consumption. By analogy with the 'French paradox', we have termed the high rate of FAS in the USA coupled w...
